Personal pronouns|Examples

Hello! In this article you are going to learn how to use personal pronouns into sentences.

Before we start we have to say that in greek we re not obliged to use a personal pronoun like in english.

For example we can say :   Personal

  • Εγώ διαβάζω.  / egho thiavazo/ I am reading / studying.  Or just
  • Διαβάζω.

So, let’s see the examples:

In this section I’m going to use all the personal pronouns in genitive. We use the genitive case of personal pronouns to declare the second object in a verb and to declare possession.

As 2nd object

  1.  Μου δίνεις το βιβλίο.  /mu thinis to vivlio / You give me the book.
  2.  Σου δίνω το βιβλίο.  / su thino to vivlio / I give you the book.
  3. Του δίνω το βιβλίο. / tu thino to vivlio / I give him the book.
  4. Της δίνω το βιβλίο. / tis thino to vivlio / I give her the book.

Declare the possession

  1. Το βιβλίο μου / to vivlio mu/ My book
  2. Το βιβλίο σου / to vivlio su / Your book (for one)
  3. Το βιβλίο του / to vivlio tu / His book
  4. Το βιβλίο της / to vivlio tis / Her book
  5. Το βιβλίο μας / to vivlio mas / Our book
  6. Το βιβλίο σας / to vivlio sas / Your book (for many people)
  7. Το βιβλίο τους / to vivlio tus / Their book (for male and female both)

How can we distinguish a personal from a possessive pronoun?

You can see from the examples that a personal pronoun is used before a verb :

Μου δίνεις το βιβλίο.

But a possessive pronoun is used after a noun:

Το βιβλίο μου

More difficult examples:

  1.  Μου δίνεις το βιβλίο.  /mu thinis to vivlio / You give me the book.

⇒ Μου το δίνεις. /  mu to thinis/ You give me it. ⇒ The word ”το” is a personal pronoun and it refers to the word – book. Or we just can say : Μου δίνεις αυτό. /mu thinis afto/ You give me it.

  2.  Σου δίνω το βιβλίο.  / su thino to vivlio / I give you the book.

⇒ Σου το δίνω. /su to thino/ I give it to you.

  3. Του δίνω το βιβλίο. / tu thino to vivlio / I give him the book. ⇒ Του το δίνω.  ⇒ I give it to him.

  4. Της δίνω το βιβλίο. / tis thino to vivlio / I give her the book.  ⇒ Της το δίνω. / tis to thino/ I give it to her.
